Quantity: Many, Much, A Lot of/Lots of
First of all, we have to distinguish between countable and uncountable nouns:
- Countable nouns: these are nouns we can count (apples, pears, pencils, chairs, animals...)
- Uncountable nouns: these are nouns we cannot count (sugar, bread, rice, coffee, water, juice...)
- Many: we use many with countable nouns. For example: There are many chairs in the classroom (*Hay muchas sillas en la clase).
- Much: we use much with uncountable nouns. For example: There is much sugar in the jar. (*Hay mucha azúcar en el tarro).
- A lot of/ lots of: they are synonyms and can be use with both countable and uncountable nouns. For example: There are lots of bananas in the fruit bowl. (*Hay muchos plátanos en el frutero)
The question words we use for quantity are How many (countable nouns) and How much (uncountable nouns). For example: How many oranges have you got? How much juice is there in the glass? (*¿Cuántas naranjas tienes? ¿Cuánto zumo hay en el vaso?)
