SCIENCE YEAR 6

CHEMICAL REACTIONS

Good morning Year 6 pupils!

Yesterday we explained the differences between a physical change and a chemical change. Remember:
  • Physical changes can be changes to the size, shape, colour or state of matter, but they do not produce new substances. For example, the vaporization process in which a liquid turns into gas.
  • Chemical changes happens when the original matter transforms into other new substances. For example, when we burn a paper, it transforms into smoke and ashes, which are different substances.
Today we are going to learn three different chemical reactions:
  • Oxidation.
It happens when we combine some metal substances with water and oxygen. You will understand it better watching this video:

  • Combustion.
It happens when objects or substances are burned. Let´s see a combustion experiment:

  • Fermentation
It happens in some living things, such as yeast and bacteria. Do you remember our Kefir? The process in which it creates the "yogurt" is fermentation. Let´s have a look at this Timelapse about the fermentation of bread:

Now, you have all the information to read the page 74 and complete the exercise number 1 (page 75). Cheers!
