ENGLISH - YEAR 4

COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES

We use the comparatives to relate two things. In this case, we express that someone or something is more than other.

We use the superlatives to express maximum degree.

To use these adjectives we have to follow three main rules:
  1. SHORT ADJECTIVES (One syllable).
  • To form comparatives we add -ed at the end of the adjective. Then, we add, than
          For example:

          He is older than me.
The red car is bigger than the green car.
The ring is cheaper than the necklace.

  • To form superlatives we add the before the adjective and -est at the end of it.
         For example:

          He is the oldest.
The red car is the biggest.
          The ring is the cheapest.
  1. LONG ADJECTIVES (Two or more syllables).
  • To form comparatives we add more before the adjective. Then, we add, than
          For example:

He is more intelligent than me.
The red car is more modern than the green car.
The ring is more expensive than the necklace.

  • To form superlatives we add the most before the adjective.
         For example:

          He is the most intelligent.
The red car is the most modern.
The ring is the most expensive.
  1. IRREGULAR ADJECTIVES
  • These are adjectives that don´t follow the other rules, so we have to learn them apart.
Good (adjective) --> Better than (comparative) --> The best (superlative)
Bad (adjective) --> Worse than (comparative) --> The worst (superlative)
          For example:
That box is better than the other.
          My pencil is the worst

* To form your own sentences, don´t forget to keep the structure:
   SUBJECT + VERB + COMPLEMENTS

Here you´ve got two very interesting videos about comparatives and superlatives if you are still hesitant. Enjoy!
